Paul,

I was deeply touched by the book of Ecclesiastes during a period of transition in my life in the mid-1990s. The fact that the author of Ecclesiastes (probably King Solomon) was delving deeply into some of the more perplexing issues of life appealed to me both because of what was occurring in my life at that time, and because my training in Astrophysics leads me to probe into what is going on in the universe. I wrote the book because I wanted to share what I had learned through a 15-year period of studying Ecclesiastes, including the wide scope of views presented by different writers of Ecclesiastes’ commentaries. I believe that we learn best when we encounter, and have to think through, various viewpoints to arrive at an understanding which we “own”.

InHwan,

Ecclesiastes is in a completely different area of knowledge than Astrophysics, but I feel that the insights provided by the writer of Ecclesiastes are just as important for understanding our place on earth as is an understanding of the physical processes taking place in the stars. I value both types of knowledge and believe that we are incomplete without both types of knowledge.

How is it different than other commentaries? It would be interesting to read a commentary from a scientific person…
